About Us
For more than 12 years, ASSAMBA has been at the forefront of bamboo cultivation, environmental restoration, and sustainable community development in Mozambique. What began as a small initiative has grown into a leading force for ecological innovation, climate resilience, and green economic empowerment.
Our Roots in Bamboo Cultivation
At the heart of our work is bamboo — one of the world’s most sustainable natural resources.
ASSAMBA manages a thriving 3-hectare bamboo farm with over 3,000 mature plants, supported by a dedicated nursery capable of producing 6,000 seedlings every six months. This capacity not only fuels our own expansion but also enables us to support farmers, community groups, and environmental projects across the region.
Empowering Communities Through Training
Sustainable development is only possible when people are equipped with the right knowledge.
So far, we have:
- Trained 40 farmers and charcoal producers in bamboo cultivation, management techniques, and bamboo-based charcoal production.
- Hosted workshops for over 150 participants, covering bamboo construction, furniture making, food production, bamboo charcoal, and curriculum development.
Our training programs focus on hands-on learning and are designed to help communities develop long-term, eco-friendly income opportunities.
Key Projects Driving Impact
Over the years, ASSAMBA has secured major partnerships and grants that have accelerated our mission:
€15,000 PACJA Grant — Expanding Community Bamboo Cultivation
This project is increasing our bamboo plantation by 10 additional hectares while training surrounding communities in sustainable land-use practices. It strengthens livelihoods while restoring degraded ecosystems.
€18,000 Merz Foundation Project — Establishing the Bamboo Park
With support from the Merz Foundation, we are rehabilitating 16 hectares of degraded land in the Matutuíne district through the creation of the Bamboo Park — a space dedicated to restoration, education, and long-term environmental stewardship.
€120,000 DAAD Collaboration — Advancing Bamboo Education
In partnership with academic institutions such as RheinMain University of Applied Sciences and Frankfurt University, ASSAMBA is leading the local implementation of a pioneering project funded by a €120,000 DAAD grant. Together, we are developing a bamboo-focused curriculum that enhances scientific knowledge, practical skills, and environmental understanding within the region.
Our Commitment
ASSAMBA is driven by a simple but powerful vision: to promote sustainable development by transforming bamboo into an engine for economic growth, environmental protection, and community empowerment.
Through research, training, cultivation, and international collaboration, we continue to build a greener and more sustainable future for Mozambique.
